Call to Support Local Charity
Chicagoland Browncoats are proud to hold our charity screening to benefit Equality Now, but we felt we also needed to give back directly to a local charity.
We have chosen The House of Good Shepherd, a favorite of ours. On the day of the screening—July 19—we will be collecting much-needed items that are vital in helping the families who are breaking away from abusive homes.
The House of the Good Shepherd is a shelter and recovery program for battered women and their children that works to end the cycle of domestic violence in the Chicagoland area.
The House has an outstanding record; 91% of the women in the program leave their abusers and go on to make productive lives for themselves and their children, and 83% of all donated funds goes directly to the program.
Chicago Screening: July 19, 2008
Due to the print shortage, we checked into our options and ultimately decided that we needed to move our screening in order to use a 35mm print*. Therefore, our new date for the Chicago screening is July 19, 2008 and we have confirmed a print for our date.
Advance Ticket sales are over. Tickets will be available on July 19th, at the door at 7 PM. Movie starts at 8 PM

Here’s How It Is
In 2006, Browncoats in 47 cities around the world answered the call to hold "Can't Stop The Serenity" events. By holding screenings of Joss Whedon's film "Serenity" they raised over $65,000 for the women's rights advocacy group Equality Now. In 2007, over $100,000 was raised globally. The goal for 2008 is to hold events in over 55 cities across the globe in late June, raising over $150,000 in donations.
In 2006 Chicagoland Browncoats raised $2,600 with only 10 days of planning. In 2007, we raised $4,032.90. With your help, we hope to top that number in 2008.
There are two ways to fight a battle like ours. One is to whisper in the ear of the masses, try subtlely and gradually to change the gender expectations and mythic structures of our culture. That's me. The other is to step up and confront the thousands of atrocities that are taking place around the world on an immediate, one-by-one basis. That's a great deal harder, and that's Equality Now. It's not about politics; it's about basic human decency.
— Joss Whedon
