Hi, just registered as aimlesst. I'm a Milwaukee area browncoat, though I lived in the Chicago area for years and drive down for Windycon each year. I was looking to scope out events further from Milwaukee.

Hey, Debbie, thanks for getting in touch!

In answer to your questions, I think content-wise there shouldn't be a problem. "Serenity" is PG-13 for violence and mild language; "Dr. Horrible" doesn't have an MPAA rating that I'm aware of, but I suspect would probably also be a PG-13. I think Luke's set tends to be fairly family-friendly.

It is not a dressy event, although if any of your boys *are* into anything Whedony, they might want to participate in the costume contest. The eats are the usual theater concession stand fare; see the Google map linked off our Theater page for a listing of what they have available. The theater also offers beer and wine.

Our crowd is generally very well-behaved and considerate, and yes, the event is definitely open to the uninitiated. If anyone wants to study up before the show, I recommend watching the "Firefly" series, in DVD order -- and, if necessary, with subtitles! Although as you know the movie stands on its own very well, I think it packs more punch if you get to know the characters a little bit first.

One thing that might be an issue for your group is that this will be a late evening. We're starting at 7:00 this year, but I suspect that with everything we have planned, the movie probably won't be over until around midnight. In addition to "Serenity," we have "Dr. Horrible," live music, a costume contest, prize drawings, and an auction.

The event is not sold out; the Portage Theater is huge, and we have room for many more. I'll contact you off-forum about the tickets.

Hope you all can make it, and I hope your boys will enjoy it!

Hi, Maria,

Thanks for your interest! This is an old post, which is why you're not seeing the current list here. This year's list is under the Local Charity heading at the top of the page; it was updated this June with some of the basics, and should be updated again in early August when we know what the House's August needs are.

Thanks again, and hope to see you at the show!

Hey! I just saw the listing for the showing of Serenity at the Portage... yay for you guys and all that charity fundraising!

I am a teacher and am looking to take my Advisory (homeroom) of 25 sophomore boys to see a movie as a group get-together before school starts and the fact that it's for charity and that it's an awesome movie make this a perfect outing.
A few questions though:
1) Is this going to be an appropriate event for high school kids? (as in will it be a too dressy classy with appetizers and cash bar kind of thing or in the other extreme, too wild and crazy)
2) Is it open to the uninitiated? (They know nothing of Firefly or Whedon)
3) Is it sold out - can I reserve 25 tickets? I will gladly pay the $15 per ticket (it's for charity after all) and who do I call to do that?

Thanks! and even if we can't join in, good luck! I hope it raises bunches of money!
